  Part of March Around the World 2016. Today: the Czech republic!

  An energisingly clever comedy, Ikarie XB-1 director Jindřich Polák shows his mastery of yet another strain of cinematic science fiction with this drum-tight time travel farce. As ever, time travellers can't resist dicking around with World War II, though rather than the "would you kill Hitler?" dilemma of more solemn takes on the subgenre, Polák has a conspiracy of Nazis from the distant future of 1990 travelling back to change the outcome of the war by giving Hitler a hydrogen bomb.

  The scenario is terrifying, but you can tell Polák isn't treating it seriously from the opening credits. Perhaps taking a cue from British documentary legend John Grierson, Polák…

  Finally, a film I've been beating the drum about for some four years has a proper UK Blu-Ray release! It's out on Monday from the tireless Czechoslovak cinema champions at Second Run, and I was honoured to write the inlay booklet. It is, I maintain, the greatest time-travel movie ever made - certainly the funniest - and you can pre-order it here.

  A fun time-travel comedy from the Czech Republic, about a couple of former Nazi officers who travel back in time to give the atom bomb to Hitler. It's a good thing that these Nazis are a bunch of dimwits or else the world would be in a lot of trouble!

  I thought I had seen all the time-travel movies ever made, but I was mistaken. I am glad to have seen this though because it's really a forgotten little gem.

  Although it does contain some of the same problems found in other time-travel movies (paradoxes and such,) I am willing to forgive them here, since the movie was made quite a few years before many of the better known entries in the genre.

  For anyone who wants to check this out; the movie is on YouTube and includes English subtitles.

  Sometimes an opening scene is enough to tell if you’re watching something special. A heil-Hitler-ing parrot certainly fits in that category. Tomorrow I'll Wake Up & Scald Myself With Tea (what a title!) doesn’t take long to live up to - and surpass - that opening inanity.

  Future Nazis (still kicking thanks to anti-aging pills) are attempting to win WW2, using Prague’s time-travel-tourism service to deliver Hitler a stolen H-bomb. ”Attempt” being the key word, because their bribed rocket pilot (yes, time travel by rocket, just roll with it) dies and his clueless twin brother ends up assuming his identity. Oops...and not the last wrench in their plans or the timeline.

  “Send my love to the dinosaurs.”

  Nice little Czech sci-fi comedy. I knew I was going to like this from the first line of dialogue, in which a parrot screams Heil Hitler. If you like time travel movies, you should watch this. It’s easily accessible. I watched it right on YouTube. I won’t mention that you will need to watch it at 480p (gasp).

  Tomorrow I’ll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea starts out like a 70s TV show and then, faster than you can say “Heil Hitler”, we’re tapping our toes with Adolf as he disco-dances through the opening credits. The story that emerges is a doozy. A group of Nazi war criminals, who’ve survived well into the future thanks to a handy supply of anti-aging pills, have launched a plot to hijack a time traveling tourist flight so they can slip Hitler a handy state of the art hydrogen bomb, to help him win the war and change the course of history.

  That’s one part of the story, but it’s also entwined with a hilarious case of mistaken identity. The trouble…

  Speculative sci-fi slapstick like only the Czechs could make it, time-traveling neo-Nazis attempt to deliver an H-bomb to Hitler. With it's unthinkable premise, looping time paradoxes keep it zany, even as the farcical plot contorts into something far too convoluted. Still, it's more fun than "Primer."

  Timey-wimey headfuckery, Czech-style. A delightfully bonkers and wholly '70s film, the Telstar sounding score that played over the rocket orbiting sequences was the icing on the cake.

  That's all I can really say about this film, because the last word exists in the inlay booklet essay accompanying its Second Run Blu-ray release which has been penned by m'colleague, and the film's biggest fan, Graham Williamson.

  Holy Shit. "Time-Travel based Comedy" isn't exactly a big genre, but this is it's goddamn magnum opus.

  In short, a pack of elderly Nazis want to use a commercial time-traveling vacation service to go back in time and give Hitler the atomic bomb, and manage to fuck up literally every aspect of the plan (twice) - to the point that one of them is just straight up hit by a bus because he's not paying attention. It's honestly a fantastic trip and totally worth a watch.

  Also, going back in time to existentially terrify Hitler with footage from the end of WW2 has kind of moved to the top of my list of things to do if I ever get a time machine.

  Having seen many of the single-finger-to-authority films of pre-Soviet invasion Czechoslovakian cinema, it’s interesting to sample something from the following years when criticism was necessarily more circumspect - a quicker, breezier display of two-fingers if you will. 

  Not that critique or satire is forefront here: this is a gloriously daft amalgam of sci-fi and complex farcing with just a vein of anti-regimery running through it (although nothing so en point as lampooning Húsak or even Stalin - it’s Hitler that gets the drubbing in the sprightly Lambeth Walk-esque title sequence).

  Like all good farces the camera is plainly subservient to the action in front of it - and is thus plainly filmed - and what you take away is the dotty sense…

  I think it is suffice to say that I never thought I would see time travelling Nazis, hydrogen bombs, looping threads of conspiracy and convolution, outrageous depictions of infamous dictators, disgruntled tourists, disco music and death via bread roll all in the same film together. But now I have with the Jindrich Polak directed farce comedy Tomorrow I'll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea. This was a delight.
