So close to being good at every turn. It's just slightly off. It's like a Disney Channel movie with an unlimited budget. Beautifully optimistic but nonsensical.
Man, I feel like I can feel Damon Lindelof's grubby, gaping-plot-hole-introducing fingers all over the screenplay for this film, which has a thoroughly worthwhile idea and some great visuals buried under so much unnecessary business and terrible dreck. The best argument for TOMORROWLAND is its release date; one week after MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, a film about a world destroyed by an oil war, and a week before SAN ANDREAS, in which an apocalyptic earthquake destroys half of North America. Simultaneously a jaunty, wide-eyed paean to gee-whiz optimism and sticktuitiveness and a weirdly scold-y piece of corporate quasi-propaganda about our collective failure to bring about an Objectivist utopia. Brad Bird's perfect free market of intrinsic greatness gives me the willies.
Tomorrowland had so much potential to be an amazing and groundbreaking film. As ridiculous and stupid the rocket ship blasting off from the Eiffel Tower is, it’s still such a cool scene and wows me everytime. This is a huge guilty pleasure movie because many nods to Disney parks and it’s history so it’s nice to see as a huge fan of the parks. I know this movie’s third act is awful and I wish they went a different direction with the film, besides they had a lot of great material as a set up! Maybe Brad Bird’s next project will be better but that’s a low bar for entry.

still, it confirms Brad Bird as one of the most fascinating & idiosyncratic figures in blockbuster filmmaking. (i wrote a lot a lot a lot about this in the new issue of Little White Lies, so forgive my brevity here).
The message of this movie is so appealing. The movie of this movie is not. Every bit of screwball banter feels totally forced and phony, the opening framing device (which was likely a studio note) removes all the mystery from the story that follows, and for something designed to inspire and uplift a young audience, almost every scene falls into one of two categories sure to turn off that target demo: Scary or boring. But maybe it’s only fitting that a movie about a group of inventors who build their own alternate dimensional paradise feels so artificially manufactured?
Tomorrowland fundamentally doesn’t function as it ought to. On paper, this is a classic. In reality, no two elements work in conjunction. Brad Bird fills this with multiple moments of creative, innovative and imaginative storytelling but alas he fails to find cohesion or comprehension. This feels like the last gasp of Phantom Menace filmmaking which conceptualises visuals before narrative and immersion ahead of character development.
Tomorrowland is ultimately a tragedy. Not in tone but it’s trajectory. Original filmmaking rarely receives a budget like this. I can’t help but ponder on how painful this must have felt for those involved. Brad Bird poured his heart and soul into this project. His filmography since feels decidedly safer. After having seen the trailer for Tomorrowland, I didn’t have very high expectations for it, but once I heard Brad Bird was directing this project I knew I had to see it because everything he had done up to this point was amazing. Ratatouille is one of my favorite animated films and The Incredibles was also an entertaining one. I have heard great things about his first animated film, Iron Giant, but I haven’t seen it.
