Tony Robbins seems like a very strange guy, who has built an empire that he's not quite able to relate to the real world. At one point in this documentary, he marvels that a woman sold all her furniture in order to pay to attend the 6-day seminar that Joe Berlinger chronicles here. Haven't seen it yet but from what I've heard it's an infomercial disguised as a feature length documentary. Which doesn't interest me. I put it on since its on Netflix and within 2 minutes, I was crying because Robbins was talking to a suicidal man. Telling him things that I heard and that I needed to hear. Seeing the smile on the man's face when Robbins tells him positive things made me reflect on my own battle with suicidal thoughts and current battle with depression. I don't know if I'll finish it now or wait for another time but first 2 minutes of this hit me so fucking hard. No rating, no diary entry because I haven't seen it technically. But the tears are still rolling down my face as I write this. It must indicate something.

I did not know what the fuck to do with this "movie," to be perfectly honest, and would have been at a loss without the press notes, which clarify that Berlinger genuinely admires Robbins and does not intend this film as a stealth exposé. Was fairly sure that must be the case, given the wholly uplifting finale (plus where-are-they-now? info that positions every intervention as a success story), but I was so horrified by much of what Robbins does that I really wanted to believe I was seeing a give-him-enough-rope hatchet job slyly disguised as hagiography. Oh holy FUCK. Robbins is an amazing performer and a one-man uncanny valley. Thousands of wounded souls pay $5k a pop to watch his improv secular miracle worker act. They (and the filmmaker) follow him all the way to the Promised Land of the post-God evangelicals. Twisted and funny, and a little chilling when you're the only one laughing.
Actually terrifying. Reading this article on the details of Allison Mack's sex cult, it's hard not to connect certain techniques from that cult with what is demonstrated here at Robbin's expensive retreat for broken people. This reddit comment explains in detail what is disturbing about Robbins in better detail then I could. Maybe Robbins is genuine but I can't help think that he's the latest snake oil salesman following in the shoes of people like Napoleon Hill and L Ron Hubbard. This is also not so much a documentary as it is a promotional puff piece. It just so happens it plays like a horror movie.

This is just a concert film of one of self improvement coach Tony Robbin's "Date With Destiny" six day courses. The intention with it is to show how positive and uplifiting Robbins' courses can be, and if you buy into what he is selling, than this film will work for you. For myself, I watch it the same way that some may watch a magician to discover how the tricks are done, with an eye for the formula and methods that Robbins' uses is order to influence people and make them feel that the five thousand bucks (plus expenses) that they paid to participate in the seminar, was worth it.

It's tough to feel bad for anyone that's willing to pay $5K for Robbins' one-week Date with Destiny seminar aimed at transforming his or her life. Fortunately, this film gives you a taste of it. It obviously doesn't give you Robbins' entire program, but this film gives you everything else. Good, bad, bullshit, truthful, insightful, inspirational, corny, energetic, manipulative, desperate, intriguing, uncomfortable, emotional, etc., etc.

He believes that our own happiness is much more important than those around us, but not if you're not a man.
