Not sure what it says about me that I was rooting for the paranoid maniac who got revenge on his so-called enemies by building his own tank and fucking up the whole town. But I feel pretty good about it. Crazy footage.
It's like an episode of PARKS AND REC without the comedy, and with a town-destroying bulldozer.
Solet’s docu-thriller humanizes modern madness and creates a stirring, terrifying and ultimately sad visual tapestry of true accounts and dramatic recreations with a final 15 minutes that’s as suspenseful and shocking as any Hollywood yarn. Also: beautifully shot with an anamorphic, impressionistic style that only heightens the emotions.
Rolling vengeance. Teach a man a trade, and he’ll build a tank. Slight a man enough, and he’ll use that tank to teach you a lesson. Apocalyptic blue collar true crime tale about an unbalanced Average Joe’s quest to right perceived wrongs. I’d love to see someone like Jeremy Saulnier direct a narrative iteration (with Robert Longstreet in the lead). It’s like a real world, nihilistic Sam Peckinpah picture.
I’m not sure which is more incredible: the fact that none of Marvin Heemeyer‘s friends were able to tell how mentally ill he was, or how many people praise him as some kind of hero.

I want to say I remembered this but not really.
First half of the documentary was a bit boring to me as it discussed up to the buildup of this guys mood and outrage.
Once you get toward the end with the re-enactments and the live footage it got more interesting and crazy.

It's quintessentially American when there's a story about an angry, entitled white dude who is "ordered by God" to build a death tank and wreck havoc on a small town- including an old lady's house and a library filled with small children- and people are like, "He's a hero and a patriot."
Dude, he wanted to blow up an entire neighborhood by shooting up a yard full of propane tanks. Over a zoning dispute.

Does a fantastic job putting you in Marvin Heemeyer's head to the point that you might find yourself rooting for him. That's a bit alarming, but at least I'm being honest.
