There is nothing quite like revisiting a movie ten years after you first saw it. When I saw this in theaters, as a 22-year-old, I enjoyed it. Watching it now, as a 32-year-old, I get it.
Yes, on one level, TRUE GRIT is just a classic western — a good, old-fashioned yarn about heroism, revenge, loss and family. It does not build on the genre or subvert it. Instead, the Coens worked to give us a perfect example of the form, albeit with modern flourishes and their darkly comedic sensibility.
