  Fire Walk With Me is Laura's (Sheryl Lee) story, but there's one match cut between Laura & Leland (Ray Wise) that deepens the tragedy & presents it as not singular, but generational. At the close of the initial mystery in the Twin Peaks TV show Leland has a conversation with Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle McLachlan) where he talks about being a child & seeing Bob at their old Lake House. At first glance this could simply be Leland covering his tracks as Cooper & co. begin to close the case, but that's a relatively simple answer for deeper problems.   This AND the series were both spoiled for me in none other than a Céline Sciamma interview. It sucks, but it didn't stop this from being a total nightmare to watch. Easily the darkest I've seen Lynch go. At a loss for words and will save those words for the video so all I'll leave you with is please, if you haven't seen Twin Peaks, tread lightly when watching Céline Sciamma interviews.

  the original run of the show depends on a picture-perfect, pristine image of laura that everyone in town forms for us surrounding her death—one that is seen many times throughout the show and even a few times in this movie (though usually in frame next to the real laura) and no doubt anyone even unfamiliar with the show has probably seen at one point or another. after this image has been established what we experience is a small town american soap opera that is psychologically and emotionally fractured by the shocking and horrifying act of violence made against it which puts subtle cracks in it that get larger as the sick, impulsive underbelly of greed and abuse that the town's…

  Edges out The Sopranos hard cut to black scored with "Don't Stop Believin'" in the category of greatest way (/metastatement) to end a TV series. Opening on a television showing static (that is subsequently smashed), it's hard not to read some aspects as Lynch venting frustrations. Characters literally vanish. Cooper is anxious to see if he'll appear on TV, and eventually his image remains imprinted on the close-circuit TV. We as an audience are subject to Laura's turmoil, but the effect is ever-present, almost first person in regards to the sinister evil burrowing under the surface. Lynch inverts his own methodology by cutting the umbilical cord on the ironic distance. There's no Jeffery character for the camera to cling to. Voyeurism is no longer expressed through physical spaces separating the looker. Think Blue Velvet but from Dorothy Vallens' perspective; vulnerable and scared and violated and terrorized.
