A pretty cheesy spin on Sideways yet sadly not blessed with a masterclass from Giamatti, instead this has Matt Walsh as the sad sack who falls in love too easily. I liked the general ambiance and Dylan Gelula again playing a sort of dryly amusing lovable dickhead (Shithouse is a great film), but the lead is so hard to really root for and since the whole thing hinges on his own crisis I had trouble loving it.
Matt Walsh makes for a charming enough lead but the film poorly mishmashes a broad buddy comedy with an earnest, sweet romance. Walsh’s easygoing charms are wasted in early scenes that are basically of a CBS sitcom caliber as he attempts to “hilariously” propose to his friends’ daughter. It’s not until the film departs Paris for wine country, and a reasonably age acceptable romantic foil, that the movie becomes watchable. Even these scenes, which may have worked based on the east chemistry between Walsh and co-star Judith Godrèche, are marred by elements of broad humor. Reid Scott, often the source of utterly acerbic laughs on Veep, gives one of the very worst performances of the year as Walsh’s Scottish buddy.…
I have many thoughts about this ... it was bad not like terrible but there were multiple points in the film I physically cringed because it was so bad. The only thing that saved this film was dylan gelula. the dialogue was just So So bad oh my god I could write a better script than this. Also this is a great example of why men are actual fucking trash! Male entitlement is truly the worst! Dylan bb i’m gonna get you out of here !
Like somebody stepped on Sideways.
I think most of us can agree that characters don't need to be likable for a movie to be good, but romcoms are probably the exception to that rule. Cringeworthy dialogue and a lack of chemistry between the love interests made this a chore to sit through. Dylan Gelula and Michaela Watkins' five minutes of screen time are the only saving grace.
Did the entire cast of Veep vow to make a terrible indie rom-com together when the series ended?
It’s been a brutal month for my post-show relationship with the supporting cast of Veep. Dan Bakkedahl, who played the grotesque but hilarious Roger Furlong on the acclaimed HBO political comedy, was completely hung out to dry in the embarrassingly “fratbro” Buddy Games. Under the Eiffel Tower features no less than three actors from the show, coming together to make a travelogue dramedy that’s as bland as the inside of an airport bathroom. Matt Walsh and Reid Scott had one of the best relationships on Veep, their prickly banter livening up every single episode. There’s no room for them to work here,…
Are french people really this pretentious? I understand now why Britain and France are the most hated countries in Western Europe.
Watched this because I’ve never seen Matt Walsh from Upright Citizens Brigade as the star of a movie. He always has one line as like a random dad. This was so cringy and creepy that I turned it off after 20 minutes. Sorry Matt! I didn’t even wait to see if he had the titular line! I’m so tired of all these Eiffel Towers!
This started off so promising (and Michaela Watkins is perfection, as usual), but this movie is so lazily written (and definitely by men, based on how the incredible women in this movie fall all over the shitty, loser men). Judith Godrèche really does such a great job and sells it, despite how unrealistic it is.
This Matt Walsh character is a fucker. They'd better not end up together. He lied about her freshly buried husband being open to selling the vineyard. But again, this is a lazily written movie, so I'm sure she'll forgive him (even though she has ZERO reason to do so).
And that fucking Scottish accent was an abomination. Just hire a Scottish actor for the part!…
This was a lot of things.
Cringeworthy, funny, sad, awkward, bad, and everything in between. I’ve seen a hell of a lot worse trash on Netflix, so I’ll give this a pass because if anything it had me wanting to go back to wine country.

Netflix put Dylan Gelula right there on the cover and knew they roped me in.
On this, Valentine’s Day evening, I gave my parents two choices: Under the Eiffel Tower or Runaway Bride
My dad hates rewatching movies so we saw this. Great. Thanks dad!
Indie flick with Mike and Dan from Veep (Matt Walsh and Reid Scott) and french actor Judith Godreche. Fun little movie. Charming performances. Enjoyable.
There is very little about this movie that is enjoyable. Mostly improvised dialogues, embarrassingly bad jokes, bad acting, badly written amateurish mess. Non likeable characters apart from the Scottish guy.

Ok but they were under the Eiffel tower for TWO SECONDS.
The movie really had multiple conversations about KFC...? I just...what? The script was not great but that last speech was....not great. And then....Gerard?
Why did Stuart get fired? Why did he get rehired? Did she actually want to sell? How am I supposed to believe that this dead-end, washed up guy suddenly turns into a suave, charming cooking catch?
Not terrible, the lead actor was kind of one note throughout most of the movie. The story is a little farfetched yet slightly believable. If the lead did a better job I would probably re-watch. Good job by the rest of the cast and crew, especially the lead actress, wonderful job.
