  every 20 minutes or so something stupid would happen like topher grace going on a We Live In A Society rant and i’d think “this kinda sucks?” and then the admittedly sick camerawork would throw in some technical gimmick to trick me into thinking it doesn’t suck that badly and then suddenly there’d be another scene of this la la loser protagonist hooking up with some nameless dream girl 70 miles out of his league and again i’d think “this kinda sucks?”

  this cycle repeated for 2 hours and 19 minutes. it’s non-refundable time that i could’ve instead spent rewatching 94.5% of superior neo-noir LA fantasy Mulholland Drive :(

  One of the best films of the year. It's bold, fun, funny and truly beautiful. The framing, lighting and production design are so wonderful that it kills me that they didn't shoot film. (Hopefully Mitchell does on his next.) And it deserved a much better and wider release although I understand the length would hurt with mainstream audiences.

  Great performances by Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, Jeremy Bobb, Riki Lindhome and Grace Van Patten.

  It's a real love letter to Hollywood and I love that about it.

  Obsessed to the point that I'm probably going to start watching this every day, but here's a little thing with a few more points I'd like to parse through:

  - The 'Pirate' character seems to be a puzzle in and of himself. An enigma with no reason to solve or understand. He's also fucking hilarious. The way he picks up Sarah's package - popping out from behind a tree, grabbing it, and immediately booking it the other direction - is hysterical.

  The biggest mystery in this movie is why a broke man who lives in Silver Lake supposedly is going to The Last Bookstore, which is downtown, "all the time."

  I think I agree with the take of how poorly the women in this film are shot (yes, even past it being "the point" of the movie) and have enjoyed a nice afternoon of reading various takes on this movie because of how unsatisfying its wrap up was (which also is likely another "point" of the movie) but I really really enjoyed it. DRM has such a great eye and the way this movie is shot is fantastic and gripping that it ended and I thought "hmm maybe I could watch…

  completely muddled. too many little offshoot mysteries going on that never get resolved properly or even brought up again, with ambiguous metaphors attached for no good reason. andrew’s character is not enjoyable or funny to me, he’s boring and obnoxious and lazy. the puzzles he spends his time with carry no real weight and do nothing for me. i don’t hate his character, i could just care less
