A shallow but satisfying creature feature that splits the difference between classic disaster movies and Lovecraftian horror, William Eubank’s “Underwater” is a film out of its time. For one thing, it was shot almost three years ago, back when bonafide disaster artist T.J. Miller was still vaguely cast-able (i.e. before he became so toxic that Mucinex fired him as the company’s spokes-snot). For another, it’s an expensive, original, multiplex-ready B-movie in an era when virtually anything with an $80 million budget has to be about superheroes or new subscribers. In fact, the project’s anachronistic nature is so pronounced that even its profoundly screwed characters can sense it bubbling up around them.

Brisk, tense, and pretty gnarly and that's before the scary monsters show up. Certainly one of the best and leanest ALIEN knockoffs I've ever seen, with a very welcome and economical self-awareness. Stewart absolutely kills it, simultaneously confident and terrified, she's 60% of this tight little blast.

If Underwater released in the mid-90s, it would be a solid 3 star piece of junk food, but with a screenplay like this, I couldn't even pretend to care about what was going on, especially when so much of this is muddy and incoherent visually. TJ Miller is so unfunny that I wish they left his character under that pile of rubble.
Beautifully shot. The lighting is so so so good in the interiors. Wide-angle close ups, love. The peaking in the sound design of the creature was also cool, I support Kristen, love Vincent (always), I think that may have been it.

When a movie starts (and ends) with exposition via news clippings AND narration, you already know what type of movie you are in for.
Basically it’s just underwater Alien, and underwater Gravity, and underwater The Descent but not nearly as good in any aspects.
There were some cool scenes and ideas, but they were few and scattered throughout and not really worth it in the end.

when i was a lil teen a friend of my mom's used to always listen to some alt-rock/grunge type band, and one time i made a comment along the lines of "ugh how do you listen to this, all the songs sound exactly the same" and he said "that's why i listen to it, since they all sound the same i know i'm going to like it"
about as terse and to-the-point as something like this gets (the corporation dug too deep! now everything is exploding!) and even tho some of the cg sequences get a little spatially-confused and muddy-looking the whole thing is totally worth it just to see god bojan bazelli get to shoot his own beautiful little Alien riff with these low-light, claustrophobic wide-angle lens interiors of oldschool analog tech and people running around in glowing scifi power suits trying to kill some little cthulu bitches. solid cast, some brutal survival action, nice electronic score, someone says "that's a lot of water" at one point. fun!
