enjoyable but deeply frustrating show if anything i’m glad genndy knows how important A MAN CALLED OTTO has been to the world ❤️
edit: i actually have some Thoughts abt this show so i’m just gonna copypasta my serialzd season review:
maybe Primal set my tartakovsky expectations way too high bc unfortunately i found this a bit disappointing, i did enjoy it and after the finale i can see why this has been a passion project for genndy but oh man most episodes are kinda paced like dogshit, making 22 minutes feel eternal (ba dum tss) at times but the characters are mostly very enjoyable and the animation/art design DAMN good (that eventual Art Of book will be excellent). wished many individual parts of this were better but the future set up could be legitimately exciting. it’s fine
Alright, finally got caught up with Unicorn: Warriors Eternal. For me personally, this is one of Genndy Tartakovsky's weaker projects but that's not to say it's terrible- not at all! Even when Genndy Tartakovsky isn't at his beast, he still delivers.
This show is something for sure; I mean it has a sorceress, an elf, a cosmic monk, and a robot teaming up. Needless to say the animation is outstanding and the aesthetic resembling Osamu Tezuka and Max Fleischer elevates the 1890s feeling.
Sure the show doesn't exactly have the best start as it feels like the start of an already established series and expects the audience to understand what's going on right away. Now yes, we get answers later on but still. Other then that, I'm glad this show finally got to see the light of day after 20 years in development and I look forward to what this show does next.
So while I was browsing through HBO Max. I saw this and I was like “What the fuck this came out? Why didn’t anyone tell me this”. But I’m currently watching the first two episodes so I let you know what I think about it soon. Im very excited because it was made Genndy. He literally made Samurai Jack and Primal. Primal is my third favorite cartoon, if not show of all time.
Update: I messed with the last line 🤦♂️
The visuals of the series are heavily influenced by the works of Osamu Tezuka and Max Fleischer.
That’s all you had to say to get me interested.
I love protagonists have a split personality identity crisis
They just like Fei & Id fr fr
I have so many things to say about this show but mostly that this exceed my expectations??? I went in blind and came out a changed person??
Who thought my artblock would disappear in thin air NOT ME now I'm suddenly hyperfixated on these mfs?!
Anyways I hope this DOESN'T GET CANCELED AND THAT WE GET A SECOND SEASON BC I KNEW THE ANTAGONIST FROM THE BEGINNING BUT THAT CLIFFHANGER WAS A LOW BLOW 😭😭😭
Edit: so found out this is from the creator of samari jack and primal??? Now I have MORE shows to watch 🚬😮💨
Hey I didn’t knew this was here.
Go watch it.
As always Genndy Tartakovsky displays every once of talent he has in his projects.
Amazing characters, background and sound design, an extremely interesting plot plus beautiful animation by Studio La Cachette.
Can’t wait to see where it leads to.
A word before Letterboxd removes this...
The first thing to know about Genndy Tartakovsky is that two of his key influences are Japanese manga and Looney Tunes. Cold, sterile mechas line the halls of Dexters Laboratory, patient futuristic landscapes decorate your childrens' Kurosawa saga Samurai Jack and vibrantly Gothic corridors house celebrity-voiced monsters in Hotel Transylvania. They're wholly different in tone, yet Tartakovsky's voice unifies them all. And by 2019, after an adult-friendly season of Samurai Jack and the first season of the breathtaking Primal under his belt, it seemed that voice had been absolutely refined.
Tartakovsky himself disagreed. In a quote (ripped straight from Wikipedia), he said "All the projects we worked on - Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and…
Genndy delivers yet again!
Dear Buddha, that man has talent.
All that said, I’m not sure the show started out as strong as his other work.
It still has a ton of potential.
