Let's be honest: this is not a good movie. It's dull and slow. Its "big romantic gesture" finale is as anti-climactic as they come. It wastes time on side plots that fail to provide the three dimensionality to the characters the script hopes we'll believe. And the "bad boy" is pretty clean-cut. (The kids from Suburbia would have destroyed him.)
But it's got a few things going for it.
1. Nic Coppola. He's terrible, and it makes him endlessly watchable. I love the glimpses of Moonstruck-era Nic.
2. Great music. I chuckled at how the girls react to the relatively mellow Plimsouls as if they'd been dragged to a Germs show.
3. Quotable quotes are quotable. As the poor folks on my twitter feed have just discovered.
Oh, and it's a great time capsule.
Be prepared to roll your eyes and look at your watch. But if you can deal, it'll be worth watching. I, like, totally promise. For sure.
