Well, shit. I don't know what to say, after watching this one, other than where has this been all my life? I really loved the original Vampire Hunter D, with its mid-80s style animation, but this is on another level. Is this the greatest anime film ever? That might depend on my mood, but it very well may be. It certainly hit the spot right now, giving me a film that I never knew how much I wanted, or even needed, but which I'm not sure how I lived without for this long.
If you mashed a post-apocalyptic setting together with the Castlevania games and Bloodborne, and portrayed the result with animation comparable to films like Ghost in the Shell…

You know, when I picked this film for this year’s challenge, I was not expecting it to line up with a YouTube channel I used to respect releasing a video where they steal art from this film to train their A.I. “anime” tool to make a godawful “animated” short that looks fucking abysmal and unpleasant to look at while they brag how their shitty Snapchat rotoscoping filter will totally democratize the animation industry. Talk about an unfortunate coincidence.
Anyways, this film is one of the coolest anime films you’ll ever see.

Ahhh... That's my shit. Truly a memorable piece of Anime history! Directed by Japan's celebrated director Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Bloodlust sinks its foundations in the visual poetry of Madhouse (Perfect Blue): a mysterious beauty full of dark colors and solitude, totally retro, deeply proud of the old times when there were still such things as video rental stores and VHS. Strange how these vintage vibes can be so refreshing.
But hey, don't worry. No need to be a Japanimation expert. Above all Bloodlust is a supercool vampire fairy tale. As with all glorious vampire movies, it impresses with marvelous simplicity, pathos, gothic romanticism, tragic…
Wow, this left me breathless. Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust is on an entire other level from the 1985 film. Never in a million years would I have imagined something so sweeping or melancholy from the director of Wicked City, Shinjuku, and Goku “robo-stripper literally ridden like a motorcycle” Midnight Eye.
But Yoshiaki Kawajiri doesn’t merely succeed. He delivers an absolute masterpiece that managed to strike the same chords as Nausicaa and Mononoke for me. Everything I liked abut D ‘85 is back and richer - more haunted post-apocalypse, more occult frontier, more imaginative action spectacle - but now wrapped in a poetic tapestry that I can only describe as Spaghetti Gothic by way of Miyazaki awe.

(erster Film nach "The Batman)
"Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" ist, wie ich im nachhinein erfahren habe, eine Fortsetzung von "Vampire Hunter D", den ich allerdings noch nicht gesehen haben. Der Film hat für mich aber auch super funktioniert, ohne dass ich den Vorläufer gesehen habe.
Dieser Anime ist eine futuristische Science-Fiction-Reise voller Samurai- und Western-Verweise, dessen Geschichte ein Mix aus Mythologie und Horror ist. Klingt zugegebenermaßen recht kompliziert aber "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" verschmilzt Stile und Genres und liefert damit eine ganz eigene Erfahrung für den Zuseher ab.
Dieses visuelle Wunderland spielt auf der Erde, in einer fernen postapokalyptischen Zukunft, in der Vampire vom Aussterben bedroht sind. Die Handlung mag zwar einer kritischen Betrachtung nicht ganz standhalten, ich…

The main thing I liked about the original Vampire Hunter D was it's sense of style and the world it created. The mash up of a science fiction far future with old school gothic horror was something I found really intriguing. The sequel really expands that vision; shimmering buildings with laser defence systems, giant sand rays which look to be more than a nod to Frank Herbert's Dune, Clint Eastwood style western one horse towns, giant gothic castles with a sci-fi twist, it's a world with so much stuffed into it you can't help but be sucked in.…
i know it's reductive to say this because it's literally an anime movie but this is anime as fuck. those yoshitaka amano character designs are absolutely stellar, it's like they're all made of angst, steel, mist and stunning fabrics.

Savage, the spookiest vampire ever to run a D and D game...
My goodness is Bloodlust a ton of fun. It sounds strange to say for a film that is so serious, but Kawajiri and his team puts such flair into the action sequences that you cannot help but watch with a smile on your face. Lots of flashing swords, point-of-arrow shots and remarkable moments of bodily plasticity all make Bloodlust so vibrant and alive. It helps that the drama itself is incredibly simple; D is hired to retrieve a rich man's daughter who has been kidnapped (allegedly) by one of the Noble vampires. But he's going up…
