Van Helsing: The London Assignment

It tells of the events before the film, in which monster hunter Gabriel Van Helsing travels to London to investigate a series of horrific, and decidedly supernatural murders, being committed by the mad scientist Dr. Jekyll, in the form of his evil alter-ego, Mr. Hyde.

A nice little prologue of the Van Helsing character with a decent amount of depth. Jackman's accent feels a little off but his voice work is great and dynamic with Wenham sounds and works well. The animation itself looks great and surprisingly violent throughout. It's twist on events in London was interesting but barely touched the surface.

Remember that Hugh Jackman Van Helsing movie that was massive in 2004 and no ones really talked about it since? This was like a promo or cash in animated movie from around its release. It's not horrible, change the names of the characters and you're just watching an animated Batman movie.

In the same year that Stephen Sommers hyper animated movie burst into the cinema we also got this not quite so hyper actual animated prequel. The short story tells us what happened before Van Helsing arrived in Transylvania, his previous mission trying to capture Dr Jekyll in London...obviously.
The plot for this is a bit far out if you ask me but I guess nothing is a surprise coming from Sommers. Van Helsing is investigating a very Jack the Ripper-esque affair where by people are being mysteriously murdered horribly and seemingly drained of their life force. Its nothing very original to be frank, at first I thought they really should of just used the Ripper as the villain its such…

Van Helsing: The London Assignment is an artifact of its time. It followed the success of the previous year's Animatrix and was joined by The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury. Releasing this kind of shameless franchise building cash-in as anything other than online promo material and maybe a DVD padding bonus feature would seem ridiculous once YouTube arrived a year later. On top of that, contrary to expectations, the public at large was not exactly clamoring for more of Van Helsing's very mid-2000's (leather! guns! trench coats!) take on the Universal Monsters canon.
I was a fan of Van Helsing at the time and I still enjoy it more than all subsequent attempts to reboot the Universal Monsters. That said,…

The monster hunter tracks down Mr. Hyde, the animalistic alter ego of renowned Dr. Jekyll in this spectacular animated short film that serves as the prequel to the live action feature film and starring Hugh Jackman as the voice of Van Helsing.
