“Not to stop time. To accompany it.”
A genuine master class in filmmaking. Varda breaks down her own work with such specificity, demystifying her artistic choices and making her craft even more impressive through the transparency. The way she speaks about art, film, photography, and everything beyond, is so loving and respectful for the medium within she works, yet it’s accessible in a way I couldn’t have imagined. This is a truly educational film, constructed within the framework of multiple lectures, but the way she made this cinematic still and allowed the audience to feel the original impact of the clips shown, all the while adding such insightful commentary, was everything to me.
It was a genius decision to front-load all the credits. When it’s time for the film to end, it ends. Varda bids us farewell, and then the lights come up on you seconds later. Just incredible.
