Hated the Big Short but appreciated McKay’s visual embellishments this time round. They definitely added more flair and interest to what would otherwise just be a not very good biopic.
Really interesting to see a film where the director really REALLY wants you to know he hates the subject. Is he the best person to make this film as a result? Without Bale’s fantastic performance it would likely just border on charicature for the whole thing, much like Rockwell’s George Bush does. (Although Rockwell is also brilliant, just isn’t given much to work with).
Despite lots of clear and glaring flaws, it’s nevertheless a thoroughly entertaining two hours and glad I watched. Essentially a political Greatest Showman.
