Toshiya Fujita concludes his "Folk Song" trilogy with a well made but frankly not really appealing film (probably due to scarcely sympathetic leading actors) ...catchy title song though...
somewhere between the joyfully reckless abandon of Nikkatsu's sex comedies and the no exit voyeur elegies of the Angel Guts cycle, Fujita returns once again to his favorite of Nikkatsu's pre-porn staples, the youth movie, this time focusing on that favorite vice of neorealists, shoplifting. The story of two young women ostracized for a petty crime romanticized as one typical of girls. Having passed the threshhold of adulthood their crimes become visible and unlovable, two women are expelled from society into the muck of its boundaries and the allure of a painful death because their parents no longer protect them. A time comes when you learn adults do not always protect you, and that the promises of families are conditional.…
There's an interesting camera movement during a notable revelation in the film. It begins with a closeup of Yoichiro's eye as it stares ahead toward the camera away from Mami and her old friend then zooms out quickly into a medium-long shot. Given the context of the narrative, it's inspired and motivated well. The abruptness of the zoom incorporates an immediacy to it that shifts attention to viewer expectations and aligns them with Yoichiro's in a fascinating way.
I thought of that particular move, that zoom and expansion, during the final shot of the film. Yoichiro stares off into the distance as Mami swims away into the inland sea, shouts "goodbye then" and begins to move away from the shore…
