"Virgin Mountain" is a painfully honest character study of loneliness, anxiety, and heartbreak.
Fusi (Gunnar Jónsson) is a large, 40-year-old who has a hard time connecting with the world around him. He lives with his mother, re-enacts WWII tank battles with models, is bullied at work and has only one soul he could call a friend. His mother’s boyfriend devises a plan to get him out of the house and into the world, country line dancing classes.
Sjörn (Ilmur Kristjánsdóttir) also attends these dance classes and on a particularly snowy evening, she convinces Fusi to give her a ride home. Fusi falls in love, and Sjörn returns the sentiment, but Sjörn has her own set of problems and love is anything but easy.
How Fusi responds to the roadblock that Sjörn throws up…
A by the numbers Iceland character piece so fashionable depressed the main character goes to watch an Aston Villa-Fulham game at some point.
Anton Chigurh (No Country for Old Men), Alexander DeLarge (A Clockwork Orange) Hans Landa (Inglourious Basterds).
What do these three villains have in common?
That's right, they love to drink milk ( :
In the case of "Virgin Mountain" it's the other way around and we have a good-hearted protagonist Fúsi, who likes to drink milk.
Why do I mention that...no idea somehow I had to think of the villains when I saw Fúsi 😅
the story is nothing new in terms of the
outsider aspect but it is very heartfelt and at times heartbreaking.
All in all, each of us needs Fúsi in real life and we also have to give fussi the love he distributes, because this man deserves the whole world ( :
Score:75/100

Recommend the following film:
My ★★★½ review of Nobody Knows I'm Here on Letterboxd boxd.it/2TTzy9
Such a warm Icelandic story of loneliness and longing for understanding and acceptance. Overweight, insecure, infantile and often bullied, Fúsi is perceived as weird, but in fact, he is very kind, gentle and harmless.
This is such an honest human drama full of simple healthy humour and sweet funny moments, but also brutally authentic depression. Luckily, the protagonist has proved to be as tough as the land he comes from.
I recommend it wholeheartedly.
Sometimes the kindest souls are also the loneliest.
Also, I cackled when Fusi’s mother called Kurt Cobain “Kurt Cowbrain”.
Scavenger Hunt 59: a movie that will make you feel a strong emotion (28)
I've seen a few Icelandic films by now, and I have to say that I've liked every single one so far. Virgin Mountain has a very dumb translation into English, but is otherwise a character study of Fúsi, a fortysomething man who lives his life very quietly. He lives with his mother, works at an airport with a bunch of immature bullies, and takes a chance on life when he attends a dance class in line dancing.
The film deals with themes of loneliness, insecurity, awkwardness, anxiety, mental health, discomfort, shyness, etc. Don't expect a comedy (maybe that's what this really weird title translation is aiming to achieve?). This movie is melancholy personified completed with a very dreamy score and an overall message that life is usually very bittersweet.
Tackling topics like modern masculinity, subtle nerd culture, and above all loneliness, Virgin Mountain took me completely by surprise with it's unique blend of Marty, Zero Charisma and Aki Kaurismaki.
Just wanna give the big fella FUSI a hug. Really a likeable guy and this film not so depressing as it seems .
Love a nice cold drink of milk also
