Lucio Fulci's penultimate film is this made for TV movie focusing on a man investigating his own death from beyond the grave, with the help of his daughter. It's a film that riffs on ideas from earlier superior efforts - the central concept was much better explored in Short Night of the Glass Dolls. Love the “When a family man is poisoned to death, it's covered up as a stomach hemorrhage and his spirit returns to aid his daughter in finding his killers” premise to this late era Fulci offering and just how far that wild autopsy scene goes, the repeated shots of a corpse in various stages of maggot ridden decay, and those trademark not so lucid Lucio dream sequences.
There’s some dopey tv melodrama that occasionally slows the pacing down a bit before launching back into more familiar territories of Italo disgust, and sure... this isn’t as bonkers as peak golden age of grotesque Fulci, but there’s still quite a few neat moments here—particularly those hazy dream sequences which by now y’all…
It's been about 12 years since I watched a Fulci film in October. I've only seen about 15 of his films total and most I watched within my first few years of discovering him in late high school/early college. The one that stand out, for seasonal purposes, is Cat in the Brain. This made for TV movie about a girl trying to figure out which family member killed her wealthy father is better than it tends to get credit for. It was the last film that Fulci directed using his own name and the next to last film he did period so it’s not quite up to the standards of his earlier work, but it still has plenty of that wonderful Fulci aesthetic...particularly the hazy Vaseline smeared lens thing he does.
There is some cheesiness going on, but I’m pretty sure that’s just the TV movie melodrama thing going on. The story is engaging and there are some beautiful shots like the rotting corpse of the father. All of the characters are delightfully awful and opportunistic so they make for an entertaining watch. I could see people rolling their eyes at the ending, but I thought it was kinda cute.
After the death of a financier (Duilio Del Prete) from sudden intestinal hemorrhages, his close relatives quarrel like vultures over his estate. That is except for his young daughter (Karina Huff) to whom he cries from the etheric plane for help in finding his murderer.
Have to agree with Fulci that heavy-handedness soured the mystery of this less grisly-than-usual thriller. Told in flashback, each have their reasons, but it's easy to peg the killer almost straight away. The patriarch is just as despicable; harboring a violent streak conveyed in a lover's nightmare of himself stabbing a crying stepson to death. Outside of inheritance, why would his spirit assume murder? Maybe knowing he was a bastard while alive.

Naked Horror: A Bareback Adventure
Flamboyant, indiscriminate boobs around every corner in a Fulci joint that breathes uncomfortably within its own rotting torment. Maggot infested skin and decomposing minds come together as the ghost of a man that died under mysterious circumstances haunts his dysfunctional family to extract the poisonous truth.
The endgame for one of these awful people is the reading of his last will and testament of course, and when that doesn't go as anticipated, well, things get pretty gnarly.
This is mid-level Fulci, but there's still plenty of his typically goopy moments of sleaze on show to keep it entertaining... the old 'eyeballs in the blancmange' trick being a personal fave. Mmm, yummy.
Idiosyncratic as ever, this ramshackle, disoriented Lucio Fulci film is a plausible candidate to be one of Fulci's late works that has the most serious potential to be a fascinating exploitative product made during the decline of the master's career. The asshole patriarch of a rich family dies in mysterious circumstances. Because everyone else in the family is a complete asshole it could be any one of them. It's up to the innocent daughter to find out what happened, helped along by the deceased disembodied voice stating the obvious before his corpse completely rots in his grave.
Listed as Fulcis last film but I think made a few years prior to its release, this isn't too bad. A derivitive whodunit story with quite a neat reveal isn't anything really special, but Fulci makes sure everyone gets their own atmospherically dreamy dream sequence, where an annoying kid gets stabbed up, a guy gets caught in a loop walking through a mausoleum before a zombie lurches out at him and a woman sees lots of eyeballs in whipped cream? All very Fulci-esque.
Bit of tit, bit of slime, decent score from Stelvio Cipriani. Would watch again.
This was another disappointing lesser know Lucio Fulci movie and maybe I should just try to watch his most loved movies instead.
It had some good gore but it was a terrible bore and I wasn’t interested in it.
The story had an interesting concept and I liked what he tried to do with it, but the execution was bad and it ended up feeling silly.
The movie didn’t look that good either and it had a ridiculous amount of nudity.
The acting was very wooden and the characters were so uninteresting, that I didn’t really care who the killer was.
It is probably what you would expect from a movie like this, but i really didn’t enjoy it.

Late Fulci hemorrhaging nightmare revenge concoction. Mixing his surreal, nightmarish, giallo, and grotesque elements together. A lot of fun nightmare sequences, dead internal dialogue, Poe vibes, rotting corpse progression, pathologist Fulci, selfish squabbling family members, eye closeups, and lots of fog.
I've said many times that I'm a huge sucker for dream/nightmare sequences in films, and this delivers in very simple and effective ways - hazy lens filters, abundant fog, individually tailored nightmares, wide angle lenses. This TV murder mystery is a pretty decent next-to-last film for Lucio Fulci that features traces of his trademark mood, gore and horror imagery - he even makes a cameo literally pulling guts out of a corpse.
The story itself feels a bit like a 'Tales from the Crypt' episode (or morbid Agatha Christie ) but the atmosphere mostly sells this and it never drags. Much better than his more low budget late 80s efforts like 'When Alice Broke the Mirror' and slightly better than his final film 'Door to Silence' that's also more of a slow-burning mystery, but with less of that classic Fulci feeling.
In my experience, Fulci's TV movies are generally more effective than similar small screen efforts by his contemporaries.
Voices from Beyond (1991) gets an automatic pass from me just for trying to cash-in on the The Beyond. Sadly, this is also one of the few late Fulci efforts where footage wasn't recycled into his masterpiece, Cat in the Brain (1988).
