Many times in quarantine I have just listened to “Beautiful Ride” devoid of the movie’s context and almost every time it moves me emotionally. It’s specific like, chord changes that do it for me, I don’t know! This thing kicks but it wouldn’t go as hard if you weren’t able to go “Shit, that’s actually a very good song” for every one of the songs in the movie. I mean don’t get me wrong, the cast is near flawless too- I’m tickled pink every time I see Jack White’s Elvis, and Tim Meadows and Chris Parnell are doing all-time great comedy work here– but the music is outstanding. I love this movie.

The last time I went roller skating I went to a place in Glendale, California called Moonlight Rollerway. While standing in line I noticed a older man in front of me, towering over the rest of the 20-somethings around him in a button down shirt and a wide brim hat. It was John C. Reilly. He went up to the ticket-taker and congratulated her on her recent wedding with the comfortable affection of a faithful regular.
I met up with some friends inside, but John didn't. For hours he skated all by himself, hiding in plain sight. Moonlight Rollerway hasn't updated their interior in what feels like 30 years so the whole thing played like a deleted scene from Boogie…
