true pain is when two actors from two of your favorite shows star in a movie together and it sucks
A wise and well-acted indie rom-com that’s almost mummified inside a mess of overly familiar sitcom tropes, Jeff Rosenberg’s “We Broke Up” eventually gets around to some pressing questions about the all-or-nothing framework of monogamous relationships — questions that it’s mighty refreshing to see asked in such good faith — but after 70 minutes of contrived plotting and broad caricature, there isn’t much time left for the movie to provide any meaningful answers for itself.
The good news is that most everybody who gives this thing a shot will probably sit through the feather-light first two acts and stick around for the payoff at the end, as the “we” of Rosenberg’s film are played by two actors with a rare…
They break up before a wedding,
Try to keep the news from spreading.
It’s then back to camp,
To get re-vamped,
With color war and bunk-bedding.
on one hand, I think william jackson harper should be in every rom-com ever. on the other hand, how bad at communication do you have to be to date someone for 10 years and never once discuss your views on marriage??

Sweet, cute, charming little indie rom-com.
But for real, how do you date someone for 10 years and never once discuss the possibility of marriage?!
wjh do another romcom where you’re not being heavily manipulated by a white woman please
So, I randomly found out this film existed and decided to just wing it and watch it on Sunday night. It felt like there was no script and the director told the actors to improvise the dialogue, yet they hadn't been trained in improvisation. Knowing that William Jackson Harper (who plays Doug) and Aya Cash (who plays Lori) are capable actors, I assume that isn't the case. Sarah Bolger who plays Lori's sister Bea is absolutely intolerably hyper.
The one thing that this film actually does is turn the boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl, boy-wins-back-girl structure on its head. However, the execution was so boring and faulty that it made me wish I'd chosen another movie instead. Zzzzzzzzz......
Vegan alert:
Doug and Lori make up a story about hitting a bird and it died.

Enjoyed this significantly more this time around. I think a good portion of this is clunky, perhaps tonally off in some areas, but when Cash and Harper need to hit the emotional highs they do. The side characters here deliver on every level which adds to the enjoyment. Does it say anything new? No. Is the acting 50/50? Yes. But did I have fun? For the most part, yes.
