Sharply written murder mystery / political thriller with Gian Maria Volonté as amateur murder investigator, that staple of the giallo, and indeed an early scene features a woman reading one of the yellow paperbacks that gave giallo it's name:
Husband: "Did you guess the killer?"
Wife: "It was the wife, scheming
with her husband's lover."
Volonté's Professor Paolo Laurana takes an interest in a double murder in a small Sicilian town when two poor farmers are arrested for the crime it's obvious they didn't commit, and the local authorities are indifferent. The clues point to powerful people in high places, placing Laurana in grave danger when he seeks to uncover the truth.
Working with themes of corrupt authority and abuse…
