  I never learned how to show interest.

  When the chemistry is strong, when the performance is strong, between two actors playing people in love, you can put yourself in it. You feel them fumbling emotionally. You feel them exuding affection. You feel them get frustrated. You feel their tenderness. You feel their projections as they try to peel off the surface tension and find the people they are underneath in a scant two days. You feel the empty spaces between them fill up with a cocktail of lust, love, and impossibility. You feel them feeling the stares.

  And here, it's painful to watch. Their relationship is shaped by their environment in ways that confine them, as Glen points out, cements…

  Something that I appreciate so much about Weekend is that it is a definitively, undeniably gay movie that could not be re-written as a heteroromantic film. Not that every gay film has to justify its existence as distinctly 'gay', but gay love isn't really the same as hetero love and it's important to explore these layers when such love is being explored on film.

  Russell is pretty classically romantic. He wants to get married, settle down somewhere, and is shy about displaying his gayness to the world. For him, he's happy to just be happy and doesn't need anything more than that.

  Glenn is someone who wants to break boundaries. He doesn't do boyfriends, doesn't want to be tied down…

  It's perfect. It's just fucking perfect. As I think about it, my eyes start to well up with tears. Connection, even momentary, is the most important thing we have in this world. 45 Years is masterful as well but this is something truly magical. One of my favourite films of all time.
