Imagine the most brainless characters and then make them more stupid, just for cheap thrills. To a certain extent, the filmmaker takes his audience to be just as brainless. On the plus side, it's nicely shot and definitely passes the Bechdel test. So there's that.
Red flags about your gf/wife:
- Her name is not her real name
- She sings a song about a demon inside
- She's white and secretly an expert using guns
- One of her friends died under strange cincunstances and she's the only witness
- She tells you a creepy story about how she killed a bear and watched it died
- Her dad told her "you only kill what keeps you alive"
A really great opening 15 minutes gives way to rather abysmal acting amidst a slew of intriguing visual ideas (there’s a black light murder cleanup sequence that’s simply amazing). This could’ve been a rather tight, brutal midnight movie option, sporting some cool LGTBQ representation (as the central duo is a married lesbian couple celebrating their anniversary). Instead, it’s a subpar stab at crafting some cabin in the woods violence, with only momentary flashes of inspiration.
What Keeps You Alive is a Canadian psychological thriller with senseless direction and the typical cliches. Jackie and Jules celebrate their first anniversary as a married couple out in a woodsy remote cabin belonging to Jackie’s family. What's supposed to be a romantic weekend getaway suddenly turns into a living nightmare when Jackie reveals her evil intentions, Jules finds herself fighting to survive against her violent, sociopathic wife. The leads can only do so much with a shallow script and illogical choices. Characters were not developed enough. They had some tense moments in this survival film, I’ll give it that. Unfortunately, it's an exhausted concept, they played it safe and straightforward that it was predictable all the way through.
love a relationship that's like "listen just because i'm going to murder you doesn't mean we can't have a nice weekend"
