An earnest depiction of childhood isolation, anxiety, and inner turmoil, When Marnie Was There finds a way to dissect its complex emotions into mostly tangible scenarios, easy for adults to relate to and simple enough for children to identify with.
The film didn’t quite “work” for me until the twist was revealed and then I felt myself settle in for that final act quite well. Until that point, I found myself weirdly on edge!
All the same, a lovely story with a beautiful message.
