Film #2 of 25 in the Exploring My Birth Year challenge
Oh, what a trip. What a funny, outrageous, out-of-this-world trip. This film might very well be the prototype for all the space operas to follow, and it is certainly the great-grand-daddy of "Armageddon" and the great-great-grand-daddy of "Interstellar."
But the key take-away from watching this adaptation of Edwin Balmer's science fiction novel of the same name is that, for what was possible on film in 1951, this was the Oscar winner for Best Effects, Special Effects. It was also a nominee for Best Cinematography, Color. What a hoot!
