PCP is unexplainably released into the Frankfurt water supply and sends the zoo inhabitants crazy. One evening after a malfunction of zoo security the gonzo critters rampage through the city eating and killing whatever they fancy, wreaking a night of bloody terror. It's up to regular Italian-trash whipping girl Lorraine De Selle and obnoxious Super Mario lookalike zookeeper John Aldrich to sort it out.

I'm really torn to be honest.
On the one hand, this is an awesomely insane movie about zoo animals going completely berserk because of PCP contaminated drinking water. The animals escape the zoo and we get many scenes of them causing chaos and attacking/mauling people in an urban setting.
On the other hand, there is just so much animal cruelty in this movie. Usually I try to avoid watching movies that contain that kind of stuff, but I put this on blindly (honestly, I should have known better, this is an animal focused Italian movie…
"Wild Beasts" is a 1984 animal attack horror film directed by Franco Prosperi. The narrative of the film holds the absurdist premise of illegal drug PCP getting intermixed into a water supply that is prevalently used by a zoo, with the ensuing result leading to all of the animals to going into a complete rage and attacking anyone nearby. Of course, the zoo's security systems are faulty at just the right time, allowing the reign of terror to take place in a storyline that you can embrace if the viewer gives way to tacky melodramatic dialogue and the film's positional attitude of letting havoc take place. This is yet another difficult movie to rate and I seem to be on a kick with those lately. There’s a lot of really unpleasant animal exploitation going on, but then it’s always fun to see large cats chew away at pathetic flailing humans, so I still kinda dug it! Very conflicting feelings throughout because I’m sure some animals were hurt and killed making this in spite of the disclaimer, but there is some glorious cheese and trash to be found and also a scene where a cheetah chases some ditzy bitch down the highway which I loved.
It drags some during the middle, but then delivers a fantastic finish and honestly, I’ll probably pick it up in my final Severin sale order. I’d also like to announce that between them and Vinegar Syndrome, I am so fucking broke but absolutely not sorry.
When the city zoo's water supply becomes contaminated with PCP, the animals escape and go on a rampage. At times, this just feels like a series of animal attack vignettes but things move so quickly you don't worry much about the plot. The variety animals (rats, dogs, elephants, tiger, cheetah, polar bear) and locations (car, school, subway) keep it from feeling repetitive and many of the animals are ones you don't see in other animal attack movies. Definitely worth a watch if you like this kind of thing.
The town's water supply has been laced with PCP, the animals at the zoo are getting high AF, and the newfangled computer door system just malfunctioned when a HORDE OF ELEPHANTS crashed through the wall, causing all the other animals to come pouring out! I've never been sold on a movie so quick! One awesome scene after another as the beasts run rampant across the city. Loved the high speed chase with the cheetah vs. the VW bug, the elephants going all smooshy on some two-legged dopes, and the entire sequence with the polar bear catching up on some ballet lessons. A wild Italian variant of "Day of the Animals (1977)" on PCP by one of the directors (Franco Prosperi) of "Mondo Cane (1962)", "Africa Addio (1966)" and "Goodbye Uncle Tom (1971)".
Coming from such a dubious and controversial "shockumentary" filmmaker, there's social criticism involved, where they managed to be in both the role of shedding light onto important ecologicial or humanitarian issues while also problematically exploiting the topics themselves at the same time for the sake of filming authentic images.

This bit of Mondo Macabre is like an antidote for the CG friendly animals that Hollywood wants us to believe in with movies like Life of Pi and The Jungle Book. The real wild kingdom ain't so friendly. These animals are raw and predatory, and they will fuck you up. An absurdly apocalyptic animal attack flick that will help keep me pet-free forever. What can I say, this is pretty audacious stuff. Elephants stomping down streets (and heads), cheetahs chasing cars, a fucking polar bear menacing children! There's no way this could be anything other than the "let's see what happens" style of filmmaking the Italians are so good at.

Christ, where do I fucking start?
First, I love animals gone wild movies; Day of the Animals, Grizzly, etc. I love them so much I'd marry them. But Wild Beasts (Savage Beasts) was, I dunno... foul? Is that the right word? It's certainly a grimy piece of work. You'll feel like you need 30 hot showers and an acid bath to get beyond that gross feeling. I happen to be eating when the movie started and I had to put my food down. Graphic animal nastiness was going on. Be warned.

It was a good concept, but made by a freaque. The way the camera lingers on the little girls is upsetting and there's no way of making a movie about animals on PCP interfering with the emotional state of all creatures involved.
For the record, the scene with the cheetah walking down the city street at night was strikingly beautiful.
If your kid ever nags you for a trip to the zoo, sit them down in front of Wild Beasts. They need to know the truth of how PCP in the water-supply will inevitably drive all animals into a frenzy of death and merciless rage. No sense in hiding the truth from them. They'll find out eventually... the hard way.

I both love and hate this movie. I love it for it's sheer exploitation and awesome animal attacks on people and for the polar bear walking down a hallway and a cheetah running through a city street chasing a car. I hate it because I know that some animals were hurt/maimed/killed while making this movie. Either that or they had really well trained animals and really good effects. But I doubt it. Either way this movie is pretty darn brutal to watch and I really do enjoy it (with reservations). I just kind of wish they hadn't had the scene at the stockyards.
