As a filmmaker Michael Winterbottom's had a very interesting career. He's still really hard to pin down even now, but to consider he made something as banal and as undemanding as this in the same year he made Wonderland, when he already had Jude, Butterfly Kiss and Welcome to Sarajevo under his belt, and was about to unleash 24 Hour Party People onto the world, is really strange.

After half-a-decade of marriage, Rosie (Dervla Kirwan) and Vincent (Christopher Eccleston) are not allowed to consider a child, despite regular and intended efforts to do so. The years of attempting have started to wear at their contentment.
Their married troubles become clear when Rosie's former friend, Benoit (Yvan Attal), returns into her life. Vincent is furious when Benoit requests himself to remain at their home and becomes close with Rosie. In protectiveness, Vincent hits back in a comparable fashion.

Better than it deserves to be because of the chemistry between Dervla Kirwan and Christopher Eccleston as a married couple battling with a childless existence. When her old penpal (Yvan Attal) shows up to stay, things go from better to worse.
One of Michael Winterbottom's more palatable films (without the ponderous moralising or pretentious overstretching seen in other titles), this has a sense of reality in a relationship going stale at the edges. Now and then a hint of symbolism tiptoes in, but this could have been developed quite a bit more.
I probably rate this a bit higher than most because I enjoy films with a touch of the Irish (here, a firmly middle-class Belfast).
A solid and memorable drama from Ireland that doesn't tell the most original story but the performances are more than admirable and it has U2 songs in it so I suppose that's a bonus.
Despite the crazy iris transitions and frequent crash zooms, “With or Without You” is a decent time waster that never outstays it’s welcome.
Aestically pleasing and heart harming, With Or Without You is about Vincent (Christopher Eccleston) and Rosie (Dervla Kirwan) a couple who decide the time is right in their marriage to have a baby and when complications come up it tests the bonds of their relationship to see whether they can stick together. The film has a love square going on with both the protagonists having someone they were involved with before returning to their lives and shaking up their current relationship. Michael Winterbottom is a director whose work I’ve always meant to watch more off as he has a very unique approach to each of his films with no two films ever feeling similar in thematic tones or style.
