The weirdest thing about Guy Ritchie’s “Wrath of Man” isn’t that his new meathead heist movie tries to combine the tricksy plotting of “Snatch” (which he made) with the ice-cold steeliness of “Heat” (which he most definitely did not), or that the entire story hinges on the protagonist buying two burritos from the wrong food truck. Wrath of Man is Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie at the top of their game, but it doesn't feel quite like a game they've played before. Sure, the narrative is overtly familiar, a revenge story mixed with the tactical violence of a bank heist movie, but the structure effortlessly maneuvers through tired dramatic beats. It brings the viewer to unique perspectives of scenarios we may have already seen, and much of the tension is not from the action itself, although it's still hard-hitting, bruising stuff, but the unfolding psychology of Statham's H: a man who begins as a blank slate, a mere cover for a harrowing history. has all the makings of a logistics-based heist movie (overtly cribbing from both Heat and Ocean's 11) with lots of plan/execution expository editing and slick suspense setpieces that ritchie then complicates and scrambles into this really macho nasty revenge movie. i've seen some complaints of this being dour but honestly i found the absurdly grim, cruel mood of this to be its greatest asset. it takes some really dark detours into torture sequences and child porn dungeons and brain matter covered surfaces, and after awhile these scenes really started to rub against the slick genre machinery of the editing structure in a way that was more interesting than i expected. really felt the tension of sitting around and waiting for…

Wrath of Man is not your typical Guy Ritchie gangster movie but oh so good, anyone wanting more than it says on the tin will be pleasantly surprised. Familiar plot elevated by a wonderfully solid piece of genre filmmaking. This is a stripped down, hard knuckled heist/revenge thriller, enjoyable in it's own brooding, muscular way with flashes of violence and high body count. Christopher Benstead's score was fantastic. It's Jason Statam's best film & performance in a long, long time. Scott Eastwood is so good in this. How is he not a bigger star? This guy should be headlining big action movies.
This would make a terrific double-bill with Den of Thieves.

Wrath of Man is a no bullshit action film. It has a ‘90s throwback vibe and it never lets off the gas once the movie starts rolling. Statham is an action terminator, and in my opinion, he delivers his best performance to date.
Guy Ritchie is back on his A game with Wrath of Man and The Gentlemen. The action sequences and the dialogue are fantastic. The film is close to flawless for me. Check it out!

I was pleased not to have to write specifically about this movie because I wasn't in the mood to deconstruct why it works so well. It's amazing and tense. It fucking shreds. Isn't that enough? For once I didn't have to think overlong about character and whether or not I liked anyone or cared about their journey. Unlike Revolver it's not that kind of movie. Ritchie's in shark mode here, which revealed something kind of interesting about him. In his lad movies (The Gentlemen, RocknRolla, even Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) there's the ever-present threat of homosexuality among his gangsters.
