Littered with great supporting performances from a stacked cast and shot through with Kasdan's unfussy prestige grandeur, this sort of transparently aches to be great just like its subject seems to, but never gains much dramatic momentum at all. Instead it settles for being a vignette-ish but ultimately weirdly turgid would-be epic that feels like it wants to maintain some ambivalent distance from a man who basically insisted that his obstinacy and propensity for violence was in fact a reflection of his decisiveness and masculine honor. The saucer-eyed awe with which it portrays him (and the final scene) suggests a desire to be a more heroic LIBERTY VALANCE "print the legend" take.
24 years later, confirming what I always knew even without spending 3 hours to see it until now: yep, this is the ungainly, inferior twin to "Tombstone" that nobody needs to bother with. Westerns suit Kevin Costner, but the man is no Kurt fuckin' Russell; meanwhile, poor Dennis Quaid has like 4 minutes of screen time in this whole 190-minute movie, not quite enough to compete with Val Kilmer's iconic portrayal of Doc Holliday; Sam Elliott is demoted into Michael Madsen which isn't only a letdown but a confusing letdown because Tom Sizemore is in this movie too and it's impossible to tell apart one troubled, husky '90s character actor nutball who stood out in Oliver Stone and Tarantino movies…

Look, to be honest, I haven't seen Tombstone, and I know that the comparison of the two films fucked over Wyatt Earp - but winner of the worst remake? Really? The People of 1994 thought that this was worst than The Flintstones, City Slickers 2, and Beverly Hills Cop 3... Fuck the Razzies! I did have respect for them, but this literally makes no sense. Wyatt Earp, though it doesn't boast a high rating, had higher ratings than all of it's other nominees, and yet it was still considered one of the worst movies made that year. What?

Lawrence Kasdan's Wyatt Earp is a sorry excuse for a film. I was worried about the three hour runtime. But the toxic masculinity and treating women as baubles really got to me. Gene Hackman was hardly in it. Kevin Costner got kind of tiresome. So was the violence.
Glad they quarantined for typhoid. Maybe they can do that again for COVID one day.

Wyatt Earp is 190 minutes long. To put that into perspective, The Godfather is 177 minutes, Apocalypse Now is 153 minutes, The Postman is 177 minutes long, only Gone With the fucking Wind (238 minutes) and The Irishman (209 minutes) are longer than this, and they're both better than Lawrence Kasdan's Wyatt Earp. That's not to say this is a bad film, it's not, it could simply have done with being two films. obligatory respect for the great james newton howard score and for kasdan's dependable direction. the rest of this is prestige-y junk, lumbering around from one biographical tidbit to the next like it's an obligation instead of a story. normally a three-hour western would be my bread-and-butter, but costner can't decide if his earp is a mythic figure or a scoundrel, a legend or merely a man. if the west was about anything, it was about choices that were made, good or bad, and this refuses to commit to anything, lest it divest itself of its quasi-respectable aspirations. if there's one thing i can't stand, it's indecision.
I’ve always had a soft spot for this one after it was recommended to me years ago, by somebody who also then bought it me for my birthday.
But coming a year later off the back of Tombstone - a film with stellar casting and a much more concentrated runtime of just over two-hours, Wyatt Earp was doomed from the start. I imagine director, Lawrence Kasdan must’ve been gritting his teeth hard the year before, and it’s a shame as he proved his ability in the genre with Silverado a decade before.
Still - it’s not at all as bad as you might’ve heard, but just another entry into the endless loop of Earp biopics.
'Wyatt Earp' looks a little bit forlorn and forgotten nowadays, and is only really remembered for two things : for being the loser to 'Tombstone' in the battle of the simultaneous Wyatt Earp pictures, and secondly for being, much to his own chagrin, the reason that Michael Madsen couldn't play Vincent Vega in 'Pulp Fiction' ('I can't say anything good about 'Wyatt Earp'. It's a three-hour closeup of Kevin'). The movie is draggy, earnest, dour, lacks 'Tombstone's rootin'-tootin' firepower, but was ultimately still made on anamorphic Panavision film in the early 1990's so is consequently quite good anyway.
