Men will literally make a deal with a witch instead of going to an ophthalmologist
The Movie is based on a Manga, and tells the Story of Watanuki, who can see Ghosts and other Beings.
He begins working for the Witch Yuko, who grants People's Wishes in Unexpected ways.
Visually, the Film is Superbly Directed, just as one would expect from Mika Ninagawa.
The Colors, the Costumes and the Sets, just Fantastic.
The CGI Effects are Okay, but what has some Weaknesses is the Story.
I don't know the Manga, so I can only tell you how it feels to me.
It feels a bit like trying to fit the whole Story from the Manga Series into one Movie, which is why it's a bit Overloaded and a bit Confusing at Times. So there would Definitely have been more.
So, the Story is okay, the Actors are Solid.
But Definitely worth seeing for the Optic alone.
To the dude who slept in the cinema and then woke up and coppied the words that the actor was saying in an anime voice.
King shit G.
"There are no accidents in the world.
Everything about it is inevitable."
After making two films during 2019, her most prolific year as a director, and an excellent mini-series the next one, Mika Ninagawa finally makes a comeback in the form of this manga adaptation. If you've been following her career in this medium, you know she always choses projects that perfectly fit and complement her main profession as a photographer, and this time it's no different. xxxHOLIC, which is a manga illustrated by CLAMP, the same girls who designed the characters of one of my favourite animes, Code Geass, allows Mika to incorporate a bit of her two favourite visual styles: modern Japan (like in Helter Skelter or Diner)…
don't ask me a single thing about this plot because i won't be able to answer your questions but wow Ko Shibasaki's costumes saved this entire movie!
Eye problems. I get it.
I was just here for the costumes, the headpieces and Yoshioka Riho in a blonde wig so I got my money's worth. I did try to finish the series adaptation twice and failed so I can't say it's a story I super cared about in the first place anyway.
xxxHOLIC is one of my favorite manga series of all time. I knew this wouldn't work as a film for pacing issues (it tries to fit 14 volumes of story and character development into 2 hours) but I also thought this would be at least visually interesting given Mika Ninagawa's flare for the visual. But really it just turns into a really underwhelming cosplay light show.
i am feeling shrimp emotions but i'll try and be objective and say this, while i get the vibe we were going for here this needed just a tiny bit more cohesiveness. a teeny tiny bit of it.
This is Mika Ninagawa's fifth film, and so far I've loved every single one of them. Regardless of the genre she works in, she stays true to her personal aesthetic, which always comes to dominate the experience. Her work is true maximalist heaven, especially when it comes to visual prowess. She was smart to adapt xxxHolic, a franchise allowing her to go full out with sets and costumes. The astounding visuals are a given, the soundtrack is a welcome surprise, the rest is just pure bonus. If Ninagawa keeps this up, she's well on her way to becoming one of my absolute favorite directors.
