  Looney Tunes x Tati x fun Godard + Demy's parrot + je ne sais quoi = Zanzie dans le Metro. It's completely bonkers and unrelenting. Surely it's the pinnacle of whatever the hell it is.

  Pauline Kael said it was a big hit in France and a miss in the US. It's 'almost demonic in its inventiveness' and one critic said 'there's something not quite innocent or healthy' about it. There's definitely a disconcerting, unwholesome undercurrent and I can't decide whether that's a plus or a minus. There's a lot packed in to this chaotic and surreal hilarity. For example, many funny references to other films and Malle's own films, some satire about French people vs WWII and extensive digs at modern interior decoration and it's shallow garishness, no doubt critiquing something wider. I took away half a star for the 'old hag' stuff.

  The French poster proves that Zazie gave birth to Troll Face before The Mask did.

  This review is to movies like alcohol is to crack.
  Funny as hell.
  Smoke that one.
  First of its kind? Probably so. Technically ahead of its time.
  The logic of the cartoons is brought to life. Only director in the Nouvelle Vague that could have adapted Queneau? Maybe so. Maybe Demy as well. Maybe both together dressed as purple ballerinas. Hyperactive, drug-induced, slapstick style with the colors of the rainbow.
  If you suck my cigar, the bear will burn the place down, but the lesbians will get diarrhea. Funny as a chimpanzee's butt. Too bad that Picasso's balls intervened in the metamorphosis of the USB.…

  wanted to hate this (like im gonna hate any movie with a giant magnet) but its good and weird, controlled pandemonium--"in 20 years there wont be teachers anymore, theyll be replaced by movies, tv, electronics, stuff like that"--"whats a homosexual?" "a man that wears blue jeans." 60s french comedy is the kind of demonic peter sellers trip that gets shit on here from high-strung guys named like "thelemic schoonmaker🚬" but wry shit-talking gremlinist/harpo-marxian chaos hits loud in our stifled, neurotic age.

  Don't even get me started on that poster.

  Catherine Demongeot, the 10 year old star of Zazie In The Metro, deserves so much better. Mind you, she would have deserved so much more than that monstrosity if she had been terrible in this film, but she is about as far from terrible as you can get.

  One of the truly great child performances that I have ever seen, it is the glue that holds together a film that does not really seem to be all that concerned with being all that coherent and complete anyway. This free-wheeling farce, fantasy and satire on post-war Parisian society and culture is also quite a world apart from the only other Louis Malle film…

  Pendant le visionnement, je me suis surpris à plusieurs reprises à me dire quelque chose du genre: « Ah oui, on a le droit de faire ça au cinéma?! »

  Car Zazie dans le métro est une oeuvre infiniment libre, qui se moque impunément des normes et des conventions, et qui nous offre en retour une aventure pleine de vie, d'audace et d'abandon. Je crois que la dernière fois que j'ai ressenti autant de liberté créative en regardant un film, c'était quand j'ai découvert Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie pour la première fois.

  Il va sans dire que je conseille ce chef-d'oeuvre à quiconque fait ou voudrait faire du cinéma.

  Makes Breathless look comatose by comparison.

  Manic, anarchic cinema. The fun turns rancid very quickly. Like binge-eating an entire jar of sweets, the initial sugar rush gradually makes way for nausea.

  I don't think Malle wants me to be enjoying myself. This has a nasty, unsettling undercurrent that made me feel a bit sick. I don't find an 11 year-old being repeatedly sexualised by dirty old men funny. All the care-free, madcap humour feels more malicious than anything. That's the point, I guess. 🤷

  Pierrot le Fou harnesses the same hyperactive energy and formal playfulness for good. So does Celine and Julie. This is something far more unwholesome. It's basically cinematic trolling.

  It’s common courtesy not to ask someone if they are a hormosessual, especially when they are that high in the sky, but Zazie does not give one fuck about you. Zazie cares only for the chase and as soon as she is caught it’s on to the next one. Takes me back to my high school days.
