A modernist take on Sherlock Holmes, Zero Effect puts an excellent Bill Pullman in Holmes' shoes as Daryl Zero, 'the greatest private investigator in the world' (by his own accord, and hard to argue at times), with a refreshingly straight-laced Ben Stiller as his Watson, Steve Arlo. Jake Kasdan does an admirable job alluding to Zero's Holmesian nature - drug problems, personality quirks, and superbly impressive deductive skills - while fleshing him out as a unique character thanks in large part to Pullman's portrayal of Zero's eccentricities. Ryan O'Neal and Kim Dickens round out the cast as the main participants in the case Zero takes on, with twists, turns, and misdirection that are never really surprising, but neither offensively spotlighted…
