I've never seen a film that so perfectly and seamlessly captures the passage of time. Not only is it a central theme of the film, it's literally a plot point; part of the reason why the Zodiac Killer hasn't been caught is because he faded away, fell into the past. Fincher & co. miss nothing with an unparalleled scrutiny and attention-to-detail, also seen in the sharp direction and precise camerawork; it's no wonder Fincher is known for his unwavering perfectionism, strenuous rehearsal schedule, and multiple takes, the camera movements are so precise, strictly motivated, and completely in-sync with the actor's blocking and what's going on in the scene. Truly masterful directing, easily Fincher's best; he hasn't surpassed it, and nobody else really has, either.
