Mr. Brooks

Mr. Brooks ★★★½

Kevin Costner adds gravitas to every film he has made and in this tale of a mild mannered serial killer hell bent on reforming his murderous ways, his solid performance makes this a simultaneously chilling, mesmerising and humorous film. Costner's interactions with his acerbic and insistent id, played wonderfully by the always reliable William Hurt, is entirely absorbing and provides a very creative theatrical solution for revealing the thoughts and moral quandaries of a particularly disturbing and fascinating protagonist. Mr. Brooks does well to take its time and the measured pace works so well as the film bit by bit tightens its dramatic screws.
