Ugetsu ★★★★

This is both a ghost story, and one of poverty-to-wealth, exploring the effects success can have on a person. What makes this film from Mizoguchi so unique is how it drifts between reality and the supernatural. It does it in a way that catches you off guard. The performances carry the film so well, and the plot is simple, but beautifully told. I still prefer Mizoguchi's Sansho Dayu over this film, but I can see how it has become acclaimed. It is haunting, emotional and often hypnotic, making it another piece of fine Japanese cinema.
