Filmspotting’s review published on Letterboxd:
I never have go-to answers when people ask me about widely-adored prestige pictures I consider overrated, so I'm glad I finally caught up with this. Not willing to go so far as Stanley Kauffmann and call it an "overwrought, hollowly symbolic glob of glutinous nonsense," but it certainly seems to substitute a combination of heavy-handed symbolism and mild-at-best trangressiveness for coherency. There's rarely anything more seductive than finally-unleashed sexual repression, but Keitel's nude scenes in "Bad Lieutenant" might be just as hot as the piano lessons here.
...Still, almost got another half star just for Hunter, Paquin and Neill.
