The American Friend

The American Friend ★★★★½

Wim Wenders’ dextrously crafted thriller might just be my favourite Tom Ripley story and my second favourite Wenders film.

Bruno Ganz carries the film like an Olympian, with Hopper straight off the ppl be from shooting Apocalypse Now, he looks one line of coke away from death, yet I wouldn’t have his haunting persona any other way.

I’ll admit, even on a rewatch, it’s hard to keep track of what’s going on, who’s who, and where we are, however I think that’s why I really like it; the ambivalence isn’t just on the film, but it also empowers me to want to watch it again and again.
