I was on board for a good portion of A FACE IN THE CROWD but began to lose faith as it drifted to its conclusion. I began resenting the simple classification of everyone into a couple of buckets – 1) unintelligent, gullible bumpkins and 2)the urbane can’t-be-fooled sophisticate of Walter Matthau. Patricia Neal’s character is the only one that shows much depth. While there’s daily evidence that a large number of people can be fooled into supporting a trumped-up war and sacrificing civil rights, it’s insulting to structure the divide separating those who are fooled and those who aren’t along a rural/city, rich/poor division
