I think it’s time that we Letterboxd users have a serious discussion about VENEREAL DISEASE. That’s right, VD, The Drip, The Duntch, Lobster Tails, Meow Mix, The Red Lollipops, Goose Nuts. The Hard Road is here to hold our hands through this tough discussion. And to show us pictures LIKE THIS [screen fills with a bubbling, swollen sex organ] or THIS [screen fills with a greasy, bleeding genital] etc etc.

Peter Lorre is the pervert's pervert, the ur-incel - as bald as an egg and dabbed with sweat beads as sticky as morning dew on a blade of grass. He goes to see a play every night to ogle his favorite actress, but this isn't a normal stage production, this play is a horrorshow where the object of his obsession is tied up and tortured. He goes so far as to procure a wax replica of her for his home…

I couldn’t help but thinking of this playing in theaters in Oct 2020, just weeks before the election (as was originally intended)- hordes of boomers loose on the streets, chasing down a boogeyman, chanting “evil dies tonight.” They dwarf the Halloween IV redneck mob in both size and intensity. Still, it’s not very good and it’s packed with laughable dialogue, awkward exposition, and useless flashbacks. Although the loads of character actors are kind of perfect, they all seem absolutely distinct and memorable within seconds of screen time.

All the dialogue is delivered as though a musical number is about to start or the song “I Wanna Rock” is about to start. A woman in haircurlers and a nightgown gets run over by her hoodlum son, Tony, who’s driving a Trans Am and wearing a leather jacket. I thought this was going to be on a Hobgoblins/Hard Rock Zombies level, but it’s at least as good as Rock n Roll Nightmare.

This movie is like doing dangerous drugs in a place you’ve never been to with people you don’t trust, but they have great taste in music.

I HATE CARS. Have you ever considered that car-horror is in part an extension of urban-development-horror? Christine is already here! America has surrendered its public conveyances to cars (aka corporate interest) and opened the doors to all kinds of horrors both unexpected and intended: suburbs (racial segregation), yards (ecological mismanagement), rural isolation (classism), pollution (affecting all biomes), flooding and erosion (accelerated stormwater runoff), resource depletion, shrinking protections from search and seizure, economic hardships, drunk driving, long commutes, fuck, even slow…
