"She was running away from her demons", says one interview subject. "Deep down she was a girl in pain", says another.
What demons and which pain Macdonald tries to bring to the surface but doesn't fully manage it.
He's clawing for some abuse in childhood as motif but brings it to the table late and just lets it kind of sit there, realizing it won't bring all the answers.
Maybe Whitney Houston was just a drug addict and her addiction ultimately got the better of her.
Regardless, the documentary is a fascinating and at times captivating summary of Whitney Houston's career and gives more appreciation for her musical talent.
