Bold in its concept, Promising Young Woman starts with a promising premise but ultimately falls short due to a hollow delivery and message.
Carey Mulligan was spectacular and did this role justice, especially given a somewhat caricature-like script. However, with a better story arc for her background, Mulligan’s character could appear much more three-dimensional and relatable.
Overall, the main issue with this film is that it relies too much on shock value and theatrics at the expense of substance. Otherwise, it’s an entertaining revenge thriller that addresses a social issue seldom explored from this unique perspective.
