I had a strange experience watching this film. On the one hand, I recognize that it was made by absolute Hollywood craftsmen with a deep sense of cinematography and fluidity in storytelling; on the other hand, I found it somehow uninvolving, like I was watching a series of events unfolding that have nothing to do with me. Very interesting visual document of the early era of mankind trying to understand and accept AIDS. "Dr. Peter" speaks about his own destruction in understandable, calm terms, which only adds to the melancholy of watching this tender, heartfelt man being taken apart by a brutal illness. This should have been longer! Maybe there's a book out there about this man; if there is, I'm gonna read it.

A New York jeweler gambles with some large amounts of money - and possibly his own life. Wow - how refreshing to see something unusual, unpredictable and inspired these days! Sandler is amazing in the film, and the directors give the film an almost unbearable, unrelenting tension that makes you stick to the screen. Love the subtle hints at a supernatural force with the massive jewel at the center of the story; very unusual storytelling. Great film.

Scorsese, who basically invented the modern gangster film, gives the genre he created a kind eulogy with this introspective, melancholy film.

If watching Goodfellas was like going to a party, watching this is like attending a funeral. You might be the one holding the gun or the one getting shot -…
