Toni Erdmann

Toni Erdmann ★★★★½

"Don't lose the humor."

This movie was a wild ride of emotions. Toni Erdmann is purposefully grounded in its drama and, for lack of a better word, realism that it makes it all the more insane when absurd things happen. Sandra Hüller and Peter Simonischek give such whole-heartedly complex performances that to describe either of them in few words would devalue the work they've put in here to make something truly special, and the film is intelligently scripted and directed by Maren Ade to build a foundation in that realism and seriousness to make the ensuing comedic elements range from awkward to touching to funny to uncomfortable to downright hilarious. I had some of the biggest laughs in this movie that I've had in a while, and the last act nearly brought me to tears. This is a fantastic movie and I recommend it to everyone, but especially to those who feel like their life has become a little too serious.
