Disclaimer: I have not seen the original movie, TV series, or manga.
Decent movie despite ScarJo's wooden acting. Excellent atmosphere all around. Great special effects. The guy who played Batou was pretty awesome, he kinda reminded me of a younger, bigger Kiefer Sutherland.
And yes, they explain why the Major is played by ScarJo. The reason given makes a lot of sense, in my opinion - I won't disagree that the whitewashing sucked, and that she should've been played by an Asian woman.
And just like other Western adaptations of foreign media, this has made me interested in the original material. So I'll give it points for that.
Edit: Forgot to mention, one of the antagonists talks like a Speak & Spell and that kinda made me laugh a little.
