I think Verbinski has a great Ranger film in him but the multiple script rewrites and confused tone scuppered this attempt.

For me the film should have been played straight and a different actor cast in the Tonto role. The film doesn't seem to know whether it wants to be a comedy or a serious look at the treatment off Native Americans and Depp is just rehashing Captain Jack. And surely the killer rabbits and Butch eating a characters heart are leftovers from the werewolves script.

The action is superb and with a stronger more structured streamlined script it could have been a great addition to the Western genre. A missed opportunity.
