This, and The Brown Bunny, are solely about escaping the prison of the mind. Gallo, to whatever degree of intentionality, may have created the greatest one-two punch about breaking through everything wrong with American Masculinity. Played through great sensitivity, the willingness to be fragile, and an abundance of scathing self-damnation, he reaches into something only someone as egomaniacal as him could begin to tap into, but does it better than almost everyone else who has ever tried. Fantasy and reality colliding seamlessly, to wade through a dream too good to be true, and yet, it’s happening everyday. There are Billy’s who are enacting their vengeful journeys, and Billy’s who are changing their hearts and ways to share a cookie with a stranger. At the end of the day though, they’re all still Billy, obviously, myself included.
Tragic Gallo the human never took his own message, but it’s not too late for the rest of us. I’m sorry.
