Escape from New York

Escape from New York

Whilst the first half and closing minutes of Escape from New York beckon an eerie interpretation of the atrocities committed in American penal systems and the appropriate reaction to the management of such establishments, the majority of this piece is extremely dated. Carpenter for me is at his best when he’s dedicated to creeps and scares, I don’t find the action-thriller side of his directorial career particularly engaging or entertaining (see They Live - which I’m also not fond of) although I still need to watch Assault on Precinct 13 and Big Trouble in Little China to get a better idea.
