Well, Raw might be the most messed up film that I've ever seen, I don't usually go for films that would fit in the Horror genre, but this was incredible.
Raw follows Justine (Garance Marillier), who's starting her first year at Veterinary school. She's young, naive and a strict vegetarian but when she arrives she gets exposed to a whole new world, including student life, relationships and eating meat, which eventually turns into something much more extreme. Marillier is incredible here; she perfectly encapsulates the young, naive girl, who then starts to transform as she gives way to her more primal and animalistic instincts. The transformation of Marillier's character was fascinating, and this is such a unique take on a coming of age story.
The direction of the film was phenomenal too, as director Julia Ducournau finds the perfect tone, that manages to walk the line between lightheartedness and horror. There are plenty of fun moments, which can suddenly turn into obscene and utterly horrifying. The film's cinematography was fantastic, with so many perfectly composed and wonderfully lit shots. I loved the score too, which evolves and matures, mimicking the transformation of Justine.
Raw is a coming of age film like no other, and I loved every bloody minute. Even though it was definitely hard to watch at times, the tone was perfect; it was completely captivating and it's one I wouldn't hesitate to watch again, regardless of subject matter.
