After the controversy of Batman Returns's release due to it's dark tone and violence, Warner Brothers decided to drop Tim Burton and replace him with Joel Schumacher. What he created was one of the most obnoxious films in the superhero genre. Tommy Lee Jones gave one of the worst performances in his career and Jim Carney was unrestrained. The film was just noise with little substance. There was a nugget of idea involving Bruce Wayne wondering what his purpose was and Dick Grayson's desire for revenge. But it was an overblown and annoying film.
