i don't know why i went into this expecting it to be uplifting...but it was decidedly not.

Don't really know what it's about (...probably trying to run away from our demons but they catch up with us all the same?) or if it's really about anything at all, but still weirdly enjoyed the dream-like cuts. Some scenes gave me a lot to think about, the way they seemed to hint at a secret meaning, but it's just out of reach - just as dreams feel.

Granted, others seemed a bit ridiculous (e.g. Willem Dafoe's hipster alter ego giving him life advice from inside a pool, the man in a dark suit spouting about the Black Arts), but overall it was an interesting ride.

A quiet, contemplative look at a week in a bus driver-poet's life in small town New Jersey. We see through his eyes, the everyday and not-so-everyday occurrences, through his detached, perceptive gaze. We observe the cyclical nature of his days, accompanying him as he listens to the idle chatter of his passengers, sits by the same lunch spot by the falls, and returns home to his girlfriend announcing a new dream each evening. Unforeseen events temporarily disrupt this routine, but by the film's end, another unusual occurrence restores order in his serene existence.

    A comforting tonic for autumn.

"Do all lovers feel as though they're inventing something new?"

A beautiful film - in the sumptuous visuals, the tenderness of the romance, the superb acting, the balance of excess with restraint. It transfixes you, starting slow, gradually building to a fever pitch, until it culminates in an absolute perfection of an ending.

A movie for anyone who's ever been in love.
